A Winning Sports Awards
Monday 28th November 2011

Football and rugby players, runners, judo experts, archers, dart players and more gathered at Andover Leisure Centre on Saturday night for the first ever sports awards.

Organised by Valley Leisure and hosted by our very own Steve Randall, the night was a huge success.

The sports hall was transformed; over 40 tables were packed in to allow for all the different local teams to celebrate their achievements over the past year.

The night kicked off well for the local rugby team who were handed the trophy for winning the Hampshire league last year, the team scored over 650 points and only conceded 226.

Once that was done the first category of the night was Sports Teams of the Year, representatives from each of the nominees gathered on stage before Steve announced the winner - Team Falcon.

Brad Ball from the kickboxing club accepted the award and was thrilled even to be nominated: "Being nominated is good because it means your being recognised for all the hard work your putting in, because kicking boxing isn't really something that gets recognised, so when people are there week in week out, going on their runs, doing all their training in their own time, it makes it all worthwhile, so yes its good just to be recognised.

To win it is fantastic, it's excellent excellent."

In total 10 awards were handed out including Young Sports Person of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Sports Person of the Year.

Not only did the winners get a trophy they were also given a £250 pound cheque.

Brendon Tasker, who's 12 and won Outstanding Personal Achievement Award for Tae Kwando - he's been doing the sport for more than half his life and knows how he'll be spending the money on: "It's something I really liked getting into, to see what I can do in the future. Me and Katherine Pearson, Katherine Pearson won the Young Sports person of the Year, we got picked to train for the England, and hopefully the sponsorship money we've won can go towards the travel costs up to Nottingham."
