North West Hampshire's MP has said there needs to be a balance between a free press and invasion of politicians private lives.
Sir George Young has been speaking after recent allegations made about the Foreign Secretary William Hague.
He's said it's important that the media is able to investigate and report wrongdoings where appropriate but only when it's in the public interest: "It can be intrusive - the press can start doorstepping other members of your family and your friends and that can be upsetting for anybody. Politicians are human beings, although that may not be the public perception.
"I think that if we do have a free press, which I'm strongly in favour of, that press should at times show some restraint and some responsibility in not repeating things unless they really are in the public interest and they are sure they're true." |
