Special Programmes / Remembering Jamie
Remembering Jamie
Friday 27th March 2009

On 15th March 2009, Andover school boy Jamie Gentleman suddenly collapsed and died.

The 13 year old suffered a cardiac arrest, brought on by a heart defect. The medical condition is known as 'dilated cardiomyopathy'. The heart enlarges and can't pump blood as well. It's a problem which would never have been detected, and could have affected him at any time.

Just days after he died, on what would have been his 14th birthday, Andover Sound's News Editor Ben McGrail was invited by Jamie's parents and brother to their home to talk about his life and their loss.

At 6pm on Friday 27th March 2009, the day of Jamie's funeral and memorial service, Andover Sound broadcast a special half hour programme. It included the interviews with his Mum, Jacqui, his Dad, Ivan and his brother, Tommy. The programme also featured some of the songs played during Jamie's memorial service at St Mary's Church, Andover.

In July 2009 Andover Sound picked up a prestigious New York Festivals Radio Award for the programme.

Andover Sound received hundreds of tributes to Jamie and messages of support for his family.

The pictures below were taken outside John Hanson Community School and at the balloon release, organised by his family, to mark Jamie's 14th birthday.

I know how you are all feeling as loosing someone close to you is terrible. I lost my dad 3 years ago and the pain is horrible, but you just have to remember you have your family and friends around you and they are all there for you, to listen to you, or just for a shoulder to cry on. As my family said crying isn't a weakness. Our thoughts are with you always. xxx"

Manuela of Cemetery says:
18:21  on  Monday 10th August 2009
"Today is the day 24 years ago that we all lost our mum. She is up at Charlton. Today I saw something that quite quite humbled me. 2 very young boys they couldn't have been any older than shall we say 13 or 14 years old. What was odd is that they were laid on the grass on top of grave and they were being very reverential. As I had ten minutes to wait for the bus back to town, I walked over there and asked the boys who's grave they had come to visit. Very simply they said our friend. Trying not to be rude and look at the name on headstone I asked sympathetically who was your friend then? " Jaime " I was humbled and taken aback as it was a cold grey day and clearly these youngsters had come up there to be with their friend.... in kids so young... it took my breath away.....simple effective and no fan fare... they came to be with their friend... "

We as you all know are keeping positive and strong through this time. The support contiues throughout and we cant thank Andover Sound enough as our main media that keeps very close personally and professionally.. Thanks to all the Crew. Sometimes it is easier to just click on and listen, read through and to share all we have been through We are proud of what JAMIE was and still is to all of us and so very grateful of almost 14 years of such a wonderful soul and beautiful Son. He made such an impression in such a short time, some people dont make anything in a life time... we smile at the memories all the happy times there were so many happy times. We miss him, we hurt inside but know that Jamie is proud of what he sees and we know that he is close by. If you want to 'just BE' .. Jamie's headstone is with his Nanny at the Foxcotte Cremetorium just pass the Andover Rugby Club/New Street Football Club.. A beautiful setting right by the entrance first left. Thank you all once again, please keep logging on to hear and read updates with Andover Sound as well as updates, memories, pictures, events, and information at Memories of Jamie G - Face Book Group. Love and much Light Jacqui x"

"Hayley, Natalie and myself have cried buckets of tears in the last couple of weeks, which have only eased on seeing the courage and solidarity that Jacqui, Ivan and Tom showed upon our many visits to them. Why should we be so crestfallen when you are so incredibly stoic and strong. I have known you all for so long and know that Jamie was the little brother for Tom, which at times you thought you would never have. I remember when we found out, J, that you were expecting Jamie and we were all so happy. Jamie was a blessed child in that sense, and continued to be so for all his life. The girls and I have some very special memories of Jamie, one of which I want to share with all those who knew him. We were looking after him on one of the few occasions that Jacqui and Ivan took a break away from family, and Jamie was obviously missing his Mum and Dad, and so we took him down to the local pub and sneakily let him put £1 into the fruit machine, where upon he won the jackpot, much to the disgust of all the regulars who had religiously been ploughing cash into the machine all morning!!! Jamie's whole face lit up as we tried to fill his small jean pockets with the 50 x £1 coins!! Furthermore he did not want to put anymore money into the machine (oh what lessons we could all learn here!!) but wanted to take the money home to his family. God bless you Jamie, a picture of you sits on my windowsill, so i can see you everytime I wash up, which is very frequently!! xxxxxxxxxx"

I will never forget your smiling sweet face (especially when Mummy used to bring you to our step classes!!! to sit and watch!), many years ago I know, but that's the everlasting impression you made on many people and their hearts. I would say RIP, but know you'll be dancing, so just be safe with nanny yeah. We'll all be here for Mummy, Dad & T, like you still are. Lots of Love, Loo Loo xxxx"

"You have the most amzing pesonality and im so glad you was one of my friends! its just broke everones hearts that you are gone now. Everyone did the best we could for you and did whatever you wanted and tried to save you, it’s a shame that we could not do any better. You are missed already and you family are amazing! They have been soo strong! You touched soo many hearts and no-one will ever forget you. All I can remember is you singing and dancing and pulling your “sexy” face and moving your hips!! And you and lillie were such a great couple and you both didn’t deserve it she loves you soo much! I know this is hard for her and I will look after her… promise….. and I will look after Ryan too, he was your best friend and he is getting through this the best he can. They say that the better people go first because they don’t deserve to be on earth. I hope that it is much better up there than it is here. Everyone is getting stronger but things will never be the same without you!! Its left people broken. It such a shame that you couldn’t even spend your 14th birthday with us all… your were fit healthy and an amazing personality….. I guess you deserved much more than being here on earth!! I didn’t know you for long but it has felt like we have known each other for longer than i can remember. You were always there for everone. R.I.P miss you soo much and will never forget you!! Love Leah xx "

"Ivan and Jacqui - I remember you both from many years ago as teenagers growing up in Andover. I just want to let you know that my thoughts are with you both and your family at this tragic time. I have been thinking of you ever since I read the news about Jamie, and especially so on Jamie's birthday and Mother's Day yesterday. I know how painful it is to lose someone you love, but to lose a child must be unbearable and I sincerely hope that knowing that so many people, near and far, are thinking of you and sharing your grief will bring you some comfort, however small. From reading the many tributes to Jamie he was obviously a very talented and gifted young man with so much to live for and of whom you must be immensly proud - it seems so unfair that his life has been taken all too soon. "Those we love will never be more than a thought apart, for as long as there are memories, they'll live on in your heart"."

"I didn't have the fortune to know Jamie, but my son did as he was blessed to count jamie as a school friend and play football with him. I would like to say thank you to Jamie for allowing my son the time to know him, he is very sad at Jamie's passing and like many young people finding it difficult to cope and express his feelings. I have found it heartbreaking that such a wonderful person with a promising future was taken at such a young age. To all who knew and loved Jamie I can only express my deepest sympathies from the bottom of my heart. I too, have read posts on bebo from his friends and found what they have written honest caring and loving and from their heart and they are relying on each other for strength to cope with what is truly a terrible situation. To jamie's family you were blessed with such a wonderful son and I cannot imagine what you must be going through I have cried many tears for him and for you, if I could say or do something to ease your pain I would. For Jamie's mum, today is mothers day and from one mum to another I would like to send you lots of love for today. Jamie's legacy to me is to treasure every precious day that i am blessed with my children, things i thought were important before such as them putting washing in the basket etc are not important at all, and I have realised just how much they both mean to me and how i am lucky to have them. to all who knew jamie, you will never forget him, he will always have a special place and live on in your hearts and minds. In Jamie's memory, live your lives well and make the most of every single day, just as he would want you to. Rest in peace little man, you will never be forgotton and you will always have a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved you. Your smiling face and wonderful disposition is how everyone remembers you, beautiful on the outside and the inside, your heart full of goodness and love. You didn't deserve this to happen to you sweetheart and you are much missed. xxxxxx"

"all i can say jamie is that the boroken hearts i am here with right now are a tribute to who you were and who you continue to be. you echo in the faces of your family,as they sit in the garden and talk about you, i spot glimpses of your eyes and smile, they laugh at the memories from holidays and the simple mundane everyday things they know they will miss the most. they shed tears for the memories they know they are going to miss out on. they sit together and seem to feel comfort in the simplicity of each others presence. i have such profound gratitude that i by stroke of luck or fate or probably both, was able to meet to and talk to you when i did. i can only hope my presence here is of some kind of comfort to your famliy and especially your brother, who is amazing me with his positivity and strength. im an honoured to share this experience with them, i honour you and your memory and we can all feel you here, around the house, the garden, there is a quietness upon the place that signifies your safety and your peace. may your body rest in peace jamie g,as for your spirit of course, you are infin8. with the utmost love and respect..... ness (vanisa) x"
