Seven Summits Challenge
Monday 29th March 2010

A young Abbotts Ann man is set to become one of the youngest people ever to conquer the highest mountain in the world.

20 year-old Geordie Stewart is flying out to Nepal on Saturday to attempt to climb Mount Everest.

And this is just the fifth step in his quest to top the seven highest peaks in the world - if he does that he'll be the youngest Brit ever to achieve it.

Click here to find out more about his challenge.

Geordie told Andover Sound what he can expect on his climb: "The main danger really is the altitude, because the summit of Mount Everest has about a third of the oxygen that we have at sea level, so every breath is that much harder. Because of that, you get high altitude sickness, which means you can get pockets of air in your brains and lungs, which can be very dangerous.

"But other than that, there's some very high ridges and some very high rock faces, but hopefully nothing too deadly!"

Click play above to hear more from Geordie, speaking to Ben McGrail.

These photos are from Geordie's previous climbs:

"You are an inspiration! To all young people. A personal well done for doing all you can to continue to raise the profile of this Tidworth based charity... Merely being wounded doesn't get the headlines that coming back 'in a plane' does... but for the wounded, and their families, it can be sometimes a life long continuing struggle for rehabilitation. While those who are not affiliated to the military get on with their lives, the families close by in Tidworth and other military bases, continue to live with the consequences of wars… How commendable that someone so young as you Geordie Stewart, should remind us all of how lucky we are.. lets hope this being on todays news, increases the funds for Help the Heroes.... come back safe..Geordie ps... stunning views...♥"
