Andover Sound's news team beat off stiff competition from the BBC and other commercial radio stations last night to win a coveted Sony Radio Academy Award.

The station was second only to the BBC World Service and picked up an award for News Journalist of the Year.

Andover Sound was also crowned 'the best station of its kind in England' at the awards, which are known as the oscars of the radio world.

The awards were given out at a glittering ceremony in London on Monday night hosted by Chris Evans. Click play to listen to the moment the news team's award was announced and hear reaction from some of the other guests.

The judges comments about the news team were:

This is local radio at its best. Vibrant, passionate reporting that informs the audience and reflects the community it represents in an upbeat and positive manner. An impressive entry from a small team operating on a low budget, with respect for the local military population.

Despite all of the issues facing smaller radio stations, here is a station which is clearly deserving of industry recognition. Without the 'benefits' of news-hubbing, co-location or networking, this profitable station delivers on behalf of its listeners and advertisers by broadcasting quality, engaging local content.

Meanwhile North West Hampshire's MP has congratulated Andover Sound after the radio station picked up one of the biggest radio awards around.

Sir George Young said he was delighted: "I'd like to congratulate the news team, which is Ben McGrail and Faye Marsh, on their Silver award at the Sony's. It's a fantastic achievement for a relatively small station, compared to the big boys, and one that's only been up and running for two years. Everyone is very proud of what you've done."
