Some of England's top table tennis stars will be out in force in Andover this evening, to show local players how it's done.
Four international players will be part of a demonstration at John Hanson School run by the town's Table Tennis Association.
Among them will be Andover's very own Hannah Hicks, who's just returned from a tournament in Moscow with the England team.
The idea of the evening is to show off the standard that can be achieved and encourage more players to get involved - and coach John Shepherd says it's already a popular sport here: "We've got 24 teams playing in Andover in three divisions, so it's probably not the sport it was 15 years ago. The game used to be very big in the factories, people playing in their lunchtime, in all the village halls, and a lot of those village halls have now disappeared.
"There's probably not the popularity there once was, but Andover is a very strong base. We've some very good players that have come through from Andover to play at national level and for the county."
The table tennis demonstration takes place from 7.15pm at John Hanson School - entry fee is £4 for adults and £2 for children. |
