Talking Point - BNP To Stand Here?
Tuesday 11th August 2009

"There's a strong possibility we'll stand in North West Hampshire."

The words of a BNP spokesman who has confirmed the controversial political party is hoping to put up a candidate here at the next general election.

They've told Andover Sound they've recently started work on fielding candidates for Hampshire.

They're holding hustings, interviewing potential people and already have two very strong candidates, one of whom is from Hampshire.

Tim Rait (pictured below) is their press officer for the South East region and says a candidate for North West Hampshire is likely: "We have started campaigning recently and we have been doing quite a bit of leafletting in the area, so any decision we make will be based upon the sort of response we get from local people."

The party has gained notoriety for its strong right-wing views on immigration and admitted that seats here are going to be almost impossible to win.

Conservative Sir George Young is the sitting MP in North West Hampshire with over half the voters in the 2005 election selecting him as their representative.

He gave his reaction to the news to Andover Sound: "I think the BNP has some fairly unpleasant views and if they stood against me, we would take them on and we hope we would see them off. I don't believe there's a groundswell of support for them, but nonetheless if they put up a candidate, I will take on that candidate, along with any other candidates, and hopefully emerge as I have done so far, triumphant."

The BNP have never put up a candidate in North West Hampshire before but, as Andover Sound revealed back in December of last year, a leaked document showed there are a number of registered members living in the constituency.

The election may not be until next year but this news is bound to already cause some controversy.

This is our Talking Point today - what do you think about the BNP possibly standing in this area? Have you received information from the party through your door? You can leave your comments below.

"I love the sentence 'im no bigot or racist' coming from a pro-BNP supporter. It really is such a cop-out. Read between the lines, Nigel. The BNP are bigots. Would you like me to list you ALL of the racist violent thugs who represent the BNP, with their crimes and backgrounds? I could do it for you in an instant. Nick Griffin for starters. I think you're delusional, you're not happy with your own life, you read far to many tabloid papers which spew out propaganda bull****. Lets all blame the immigrants! Yes, it's their fault our government let the people of Britain down. You carry on voting for your precious BNP, the racist bigotted party. But firstly, please read the BNP's rules and regulations. I guess you are a British white caucasion? Because they're the only people who are allowed to stand and be counted for, it says so on their website. Go on, tell me the BNP aren't racist now! QUOTE "The British National Party was warned today that it had one last chance to s[censored] its whites-only membership policy or face a possible court injunction. BNP leader Nick Griffin was told at Central London County Court that a new party constitution complying with race relations laws must be agreed at an extraordinary general meeting due to be held in two weeks' time." which is next week, the 14th, not that you would know! Can't wait. QUOTE "coloured people would be allowed to join his party if they agreed with the BNP's policies" Coloured people? He is still living in the 1970's, where he was an active NF member. BNP=scum "

"Nigel, it is not the case that fascist and racist organisations are banned in Britain – if only they were! Even the vile British Union of Fascists under Mosley was allowed to operate, as of course was the notorious National Front – and BNP leader Nick Griffin has said “There s a strong, direct link from Oswald Mosley to me". I too am angry about the lack of affordable housing, jobs and prospects – but working people taking it out on each other has never been the solution. The housing shortage hasn’t been caused by immigrants – it was caused by Thatcher selling off council homes and successive governments failing to replace them. The recession hasn’t been caused by immigrants either, but by unregulated greedy bankers profiteering from selling houses to people at prices they could never afford – and then begging for bail-outs when the bubble burst and the banking system collapsed. My granddad was a refugee (they call them asylum seekers now) who fled from violent anti-jewish pogroms (they call it ethnic cleansing now) a century ago, and he ended up fighting in a British army uniform and contributing taxes to the British economy. He, like generations of immigrants played a useful, positive role – in fact, without immigrants the NHS would fall apart. I know that Griffin and the BNP are trying to portray themselves as a normal, mainstream party, but take a closer look and you will see that Griffin has been a fascist for 30 years, he is a holocaust denier who believes Hitler merely “went a bit too far”, he associates with the KKK and fascists all over the world. Remember, the nazis passed themselves off as pro-worker radicals in the early years – they even called themselves socialist – but when they came to power trade-unionists found themselves in the concentration camps along with the real socialists, gays and just about anyone who dared oppose them. And in case you think that’s just Griffin’s innocent past, the party’s former youth leader, Mark Collett was exposed on TV as an admirer of Hitler and has said "Churchill was a ****** **** who led us into a pointless war with other whites standing up for their race.” – and he is now their director of publicity! Please take an open-minded look at the Hope Not Hate website at www.hopenothate.org.uk and see the real, fascist BNP. "

"In response to sarah`s comments, If the BNP was a facist illegal racist organisation then they would not hold position in parlament or the european parlament. They would be banned !! Just like the sick "british" organisation what wanted to protest in wotton basset. The BNP would provide afford affordable housing for the less well off british public, but these resources are being strangled by soft left wing councils, mostly helping the unentitled folks what seem to bleeding this country dry of finance and resources what could be best put to better use elsewhere. Why is it that in Afghanistan, Iraq etc. that the public in those countries can be bigot`s and racist towards the british and the west and get away with it, becoming heroes for beheading poor innocent people like ken bigley for example ??? but in britain, when a party evolves to fight this sort of discusting violence, then the BNP are in the wrong. Any more arguements i will be happy to argue in defence of the BNP, and i will PROUDLY display my "VOTE BNP" sticker in my window come election time !!"

"The BNP, NF or any other fascist organisations base their aruements on hate, pitting one group of working people against another. Working people should be uniting together to demand affordable housing, jobs, public services etc, but the BNP will never deliver this - they will deliver hatred, division and violence. We need to learn from history. It is the greed of the bankers that has caused the global economic crisis and all working people are suffering, where ever they are from. Don't forget millions died fighting against fascists in World War 2 and if you have any doubts have a look at the Hope not hate website and searchlight's website to see what this vile organisation and its leaders is really about."

"No matter what political party is in control of this country, it makes no difference as they are all untrustworthy liars !! If the BNP was represented in north west hampshire, then i would not be surprised if they get a majority vote, as i would like to see my tax put to good use against immigration and the crime that comes with it. If only the government would give me free driving lessons, cash in the hand, a house, etc. etc. The BNP would also not allow preachers of hate, terrorists and their followers, to be our neighbours and to reside in this country. They got my vote !! And ime no bigot or racist either !!"

"Pammy what a beautiful comment, well written and excuted. Let love be the guiding factor in everything we do....far far easier said than done.... I watched Pammy a panorama program the other night on Racial Hatred and I actually fliched.. such was the ferocity of the people that were being vile and racist and behaving in an unChristian manner..... I myself was born in Gibraltar, from a catholic mother and Jewish father but almost all of my life lived in Britian... It matters not the colour of your skin...hello? what colour is the american president.... what would happen to transort in london if it wasnt for the non white hard working people that man the underground, trains bus, clean our streets do our loos, ... what is the matter with people primarily in the North of England.. why why do they hate so much... when it is so much nicer to extend the hand of kindness and offer love..... Pammy its easier to bend than to break, offer a carrot than to beat with a stick.... BNP? Better Not Party.....did anyone see the look of the thugs that are employed to protect him??? our Sir George Young needs nothing like this..... mmmmmmm I think that says it all."

"When one reads the Policies of the BNP, one would be forgiven for thinking they are able to secure dramatic and positive changes in Britain’s economy, crime and punishment, family status and development, social order, housing and welfare, employment, domestic and foreign affairs, education, medical waiting lists and treatment and defence. However, upon closer examination of the BNP’s Policies and of the party Chairman himself, one would have no difficulty in identifying the motivation behind the creation and prospective implementation of the same – hate. The BNP’s answer to most if not all questions on domestic and foreign matters is quite simply “deportation” of anyone whose “original nationality was not British”. The Policies go on to list “corporal punishment” “electronically tagged chain gangs” and “capital punishment” as deterrents against crime and a six month “compulsory workforce” order for those seeking unemployment benefit. The above belies the “modern and progressive party” that Nick Griffin would have us believe his party is, rather, these policies are more apt to the Nazi Party of the 1930 – 40’. I adore this country and the freedoms we enjoy; far from Mr Griffin’s belief that our freedom of speech is “curbed”, we are encouraged to speak freely in a democratic manner, which obviously precludes anything that would incite hatred. This country enjoys diversity and for any who chose to embrace and understand of the beliefs and traditions of others, our lives are enriched immeasurably. This doesn’t mean that the British identity will be “extinguished”, it points to a Britain who can stand tall and shoulder to shoulder with the world on an economic, political, social and humanitarian basis. Do not let hatred be our focus or guide, open up to the exciting challenges of a British society that is diverse and show love and compassion to those around you. "

"I urge everyone to visit the Hope not Hate campaign website, they are working to expose the BNP hate politics. We need more social justice for working people and black and white need to unite against these facists - we should stand together to demand our government delivers better jobs, housing security - social housing and justice for working people, children and the elderly alike. BNP are not welcome here or anywhere - thousands have died fighting facists and we need to remember that, more is the pity the our MP's party is aligning itself to the far right facists in Europe and that disgusts me."

"I know I don't live in Andover, but I do work in and around Andover and feel its like a 2nd home, the People are friendly, very few don't say good morning back to me, I feel part of the town hence why I am writting on here. Every man has a right to live in this world, and if the UK is more prosperous than thier own country then why shouldn't they be allowed in, yes at this time we have two and a half million people unemployed and the BNP will be quick to say that foreigners are taking their jobs, but I don't think thats true, I would think that at least half of them are long term unemployed and the reason for that is not because of migrant workers its because we pay too much in benefits and people cant be bothered to find a job. The BNP are racist nothing else, a vote for the BNP is a vote to turn the clock back 70 years. on a lighter note if it does happen and the war starts in Germany like before, when we win(and we will) it will be the third time this has happened, the third time we have won so like the world cup we get to keep Germany for ever......Sorry couldn't resist. "

"I was talking to someone yesterday who said to me " This party is not all about Nazis" Yes I know that, but birds of a feather flock together. The sentiments that they originally had (if At All) my have been good and on paper and in theory I dare say they are. But this party seems to have been hijacked by people that are better suited to a football ground when it is not a friendly match that is being played. Further more, it is no secret that I am army through and through but their is a difference between Army who fight for our country and mercenaries that fight for the sake of the pay that will get. Likewise people join Parties that fit their characters and personalities… listen to what comes out of someone’s mouth, it echoes what is inside their hearts… Joining any party is no different to choosing one’s friends, one goes with those that echoes ones sentiments. And finally for Evil to Prosper, Good People Need to do Nothing. No my money is on Sir George Young every day and twice on Sundays. "

"do not be fooled by the smoke screen of fascism that is the BNP, they are a nazi party and - like the third reich - set about making people believe that they are just an ordinary political party... The BNP already have their European members of parliament ready to talk to far right political movements within Europe, in particular Heinz Strache leader of The Freedom Party. After Strache's election win, Nick Griffin, leader of the British Nationalist Party (BNP), sent a personal message to Strache. Why would he do that if he did not have the same far fight views? He sent this message after a high ranking FPO politician paid a visit to London to personally meet with Griffin. Herbert Schweiger was one of Hitler's SS officers and he is proud of his past and what he did - this is what he said: Our time is coming again and soon we will have another leader like Hitler. This next item I found on the Auschwitz website about holocaust denial: The best known Holocaust denier in the UK is David Irving. Despite not being trained as a historian, he has written numerous books about the history of the Second World War in which he expresses his pro-Nazi sympathies. He denies that the nazi Germans murdered Jews in gas chambers, maintains close ties with the IHR, and testified in Zundel’s defense. He has been fined in Germany for publicly denying the Holocaust and sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment in Austria. Nick Griffin, leader of the far right British National Party, has expressed similar views. So to all the people thinking that the BNP are just another political party who represent the typical British person - think again, please do not be fooled by nazism.....and please do not vote for such monsters "

" Unfortunately BNP has so many people in its party that are nothing short of thugs that I am sometimes ashamed of being British, especially when I see how they behave in public. Do they not realise that they do themselves no favours when they go around dressed in such a controversial way, inviting trouble and confrontations? Yes I know that in every barrel their could be some rotten apples and we do not judge the barrel by the bad apple.. however BNP prides itself on having members that are better suited to a football ground, than actually caring about our Country. As I said to someone recently ( and they will know who I mean) vitriolic comments and anger are not the way forward in anything. Sometimes a person might have something worthwhile to say, but if they are known only for being a firebrand then they will never be taken seriously on anything. My opinion is this therefore, BNP stands for the party that is full of firebrands, and I personally would only ever want to be associated with the mild mannered Sir George Young who effectively and firmly can get his point across without causing offence to anyone, oh if only I had his gifts. "
