Talking Point / Talking Point - Council Tax
Talking Point - Council Tax
Thursday 11th February 2010

We're close to finding out just how much council tax we'll be paying in the next year - and it's not looking good for our pockets.

All the local authorities are expected to increase their charge with County, Borough and Parish councils as well as the police and fire authorities in Hampshire setting their budgets.

But the leader of one of those authorities says we shouldn't be worried about their rise.

Test Valley Borough Council are set for a 2.5% increase but Councillor Ian Carr says it's all relative: "It's not very much really, because we only charge £120 a year for the services we deliver, so that's going to go up 2.5%, that's nothing.

"1.9% on a multi-million pound budget, that's a lot more money, so it depends on the scale."

1.9% is the amount Hampshire County Council has already announced that's the amount their costs will rise by in the next financial year.

"I suppose this will help to pay for the Andover Borough Council that a few people said and voted for saying that it was needed."

"have the council put their staff wages up ,the answer to that is no as my husband works for them. so how do they expect us to pay the extra , we struggled enough last year as im at home with the kids and dont do any paid work. they have made some very bad decisions in the last year why should we the people of andover be made to pay for them when it is mainly the counciliors fault , perhaps its now time for councilior carr to retire and give someone else a chance, someone who might actually listen to what the people of andover want."

David Borrett of Andover says:

"It's about three quid extra per household which I suppose was about what had to be raided from last year's kitty in order for Cllr. Mrs Nokes to smash up the bandstand."

Vince of Andover says:

"If the council had listened to the people and not gone ahead with selling off the Guildhall and wasting money on the Rendevous we probably wouldnt have to have an increase at all and no one who actually did some work at the council would not have lost there jobs. once agin they are not listening to us, we seem to be here to jusitify their existence and not the other way round. "

"We have no pay rise last year and a 1% increase this year because of that we have had to cut our cloth accordingly. So why can not the council do the same. In the difficult times we all are just getting by so why do the council feel they can squeeze that little bit more out if us for no extra services, if any thing the services seem to be cut a little bit every year, or they come up with some other charge to burden us with. "
