Talking Point / Talking Point - HMV Leaving
Talking Point - HMV Leaving
Thursday 7th January 2010

A major High Street name that came to Andover for the Christmas period won't be staying here.

HMV opened what they describe as a 'pop up shop' in the Chantry Centre over eight weeks leading up to the festive season.

But the lease runs out this Sunday, and the music and DVD retailer say they aren't in a position to extend it.

The company have said they're pleased with the customer response while they were open.

In a statement, they've said: "We've loved having a 'pop-up-shop' trading temporarily in Andover over the Christmas period, and would like to thank all our customers during this time.

"Unfortunately, we're not in a position to turn this into a permanent store, but hopefully we can look at the 'pop-up-shop' solution again in future."

Laura of Andover says:

"I can understand why they didn't stay in Andover completely, the shop rates are ridiculously high, one I worked in what the company were charged for such a small shop was a joke, and also due to the fact that people don't shop in Andover they probably wouldn't do much trade throughout the year the expception being Christmas, if the rates were lower we could attract more better shops, and we could have bigger stores loke HMV where they could sell more items people want instead of a small selection. Andover town centre is going down the pan."

DM of Andover says:

"And they did the same this year too!"

"Replying to comment placed at: 22.31pm on 7th January. May I add also that the council actually own very few businesses indeed in the town? Rents are set by the People that own those buildings! So anyone coming into the town wanting to set up a business is actually negotiating with the landlords or respective owners of those buildings not the Council. The other crippling thing businesses have to contend with these days is the business rates themselves. Also not set by the council. That is set by central government…. So please let’s stop knocking the council for everything and let’s start praising the very people that do set up businesses here, for however short a term it is. It’s a very hard out there at the moment, indeed at all times. These businesses need to be supported and congratulated. Too many, far too many go under. And none of us appreciate it till they have gone. Support what we have. Keep the businesses that we do have thriving… Especially, the small home grown ones. One last comment I can well remember in the 80's businesses going under then! .... this is nothing new.manuela"

"Andover needs shops selling goods cheaply. HMV were not up to that as CDs and DVDs were sold at RRP. Wilkinson and soon to be Poundland are what is needed, The Works is a good discount price book shop but it is too small and hidden past Waterstones so doesn't get as much trade as it really should. At the other end of The Chantry Centre Race Dynamics sell goods for cars and bikes but again at RRP and although it is a crying shame that Indulgence will be leaving after 30 years it is not a great surprise as a lot of what they sold was quite expensive. There are many companies that sell music, motoring goods, toys, novelty items, ornaments much cheaper than many of the companies in The Chantry Centre but because they don't choose to come to Andover the shops here will suffer as people take their trade to Wilkinsons, Poundland and elsewhere such as Basingstoke!"

Lawrence of Andover says:

"Im glad its gone. Its games were really overpriced and the staff we're useless. "

Alan Resident of Andover says:

"Hate to say it but I can't blame HMV for coming in and then leaving. They saw an opportunity to make some money and took it - they are a business after all and have staff to pay and shareholders to contend with. They are not a charity. Maybe the Chantry Centre wanted too much for a lease, TVBC wanted too much for the rates or maybe they felt we, the residents of Andover, wouldn't spend enough to make keeping it open viable. I for one would prefer to see small local businesses in town but would we really support them? If we insist on going to Basingstoke, why should a shop risk opening here?"

John Newell of Andover says:
18:46  on  Friday 8th January 2010
"I've spent a lot of money at HMV and it's a shame to see them go but I like EBay and internet shopping in general as it's a far cheaper way of shopping."

Nigel of Andover says:
14:41  on  Friday 8th January 2010
"Why are people suprised at HMV going and Poundland turning up in our town centre and then moaning that Andover only offers sub standard shopping. This situation has existed for years and being born in Andover i am not phased by this as the blame might lie as always with local politicians at all levels who have never cared about the town unless they are making something from it,but also the town as a whole is too blame for keep voting these people back in year after year,an election is approaching so stop playing safe andover, yes i know its scary but change will bring about change"

Peter of Andover says:
07:49  on  Friday 8th January 2010
"It is unfortunate that they are not staying, however it was never a concrete decision that they were, but we must look to the future and hope that the Town will improve."

Manuela. Attitude of Gratitude Camapigner. of Andover says:

" Please can we all look at the very first paragraph above, in the editorial for this story ♥ It very clearly states/implies that this particular firm came for a short period of time. Let’s be grateful for having had the opportunity of purchasing something from them, whilst they were here ♥ "

marko of andover says:

"I would just like to add that I am born and breed in this great town "45 years" and proud to be BUT ! why are we being left behind again ? we as the public deserve and so badly need more shops, we all know the town centre is very small and expanding like so many towns close by is impossiable due to the design of the buildings and the road net work, answer? knock it all down and do what basingstoke has done ! just look how they have boomed over the years using there imagination and given the public what they asked for.andover is growing at a rapid rate even in this recession so come people WAKE UP! bite the bullet or be left behind !"

anon of andover of andover says:

"what a dissapointment hmv not staying and people wonder why we go to basingstoke maybe cos there is a much better choice of shops."

Anon of Andover says:
22:31  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"Sophie I'm pretty sure that TVBC DO NOT own the Chantry Centre! The managing agents are NB Real Estate & the letting agents are Smith Price, as I understand the Chantry Centre is a private business. Just to make the point that I too am dissapointed that we have limited choice when it comes to shopping in this town & I am especially gutted about HMV but I do think it's unfair that all people do is slate TVBC. Perhaps people need to take a look at the good things that they have done for our town!"

Sophie of Andover says:
22:16  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"Anon - There is no Town Council yet and yes perhaps it could help encourage a greater foot fall and encourage shops but to suggest that our borough council, TVBC can't do anything is WRONG. They own the major share the chantry centre, so it's ridiculous to suggest they don't have a say and can't do more to encourage and keep companies in the centre.............. "

Sarah of Andover says:
21:40  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"Its just the same old story due to the high rates being charged! and over is a boon town but they are doing nothing to increase our needs! instead they are letting the major super markets come and steal everything! we have only tescos adsa and sainburys for choice while they pay massive rates they can afford to the coucil we are sitting ducks and must be content with what tvbc decide us to have!!!!!"

Anon of Andover says:
21:34  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"I just wanted to respond to the comment "Perhaps the town council should consider other shops other than pubs and restaurants which we have plenty of in the town." This is a point that people raise every time the issue of the 'quality' of the shops in Andover comes up & I find it so frustrating. Do the public not realise that TVBC have no control over which shops come into this town??? The decision over which companies to allow to rent vacant retail units in Andover lies soley with the landlords of these properties, TVBC do not influence this in anyway!!! TVBC do seem to get a bit of a raw deal on this subject, perhaps they need to do something to raise public awareness that they do not actually make these choices?!"

elisabete of andover says:
20:51  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"How sad is that decision. Nothing interesting again."

Martin of Andover says:
19:49  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"This is bad news for music choice in Andover and I totally agree with Corrie that HMV have shown complete greed and disregard for the people of Andover! As for not being in a position to extend a lease.... this is rubbish talk, i'm sure if they really wanted to stay they could easily negotiate a new lease on their terms! Thanks for nothing HMV, you are a disgrace and came here with no view to staying but just to make a quick buck out of us and then s[censored]er. "

Liz of Andover says:
14:20  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"I may not always shop in HMV, but I do think that Andover needs a decent music store otherwise those who don't have the internet have to travel outside of the town just to go to the nearest store and HMV sometimes have better deals on their products than WH Smiths and Tesco. Not only that, you can usually find any CDs and DVDs that aren't available anywhere else in town. Perhaps the town council should consider other shops other than pubs and restaurants which we have plenty of in the town."

matt of andover says:
13:40  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"This is probably down to the ridiculous amounts that it costs to have a shop in the chantry centre and the fact that it is a decent shop that people like so it was always going to go. HMV purely wanted a quick buck and thats what they got, they have made their money and despite them filling a big gap in the market they will go. The town centre is pathetic, we got excited at a Mcdonalds and people are getting excited at a poundland. Its time someone decided that enough opticians, cardshops and charity shops and had some guts to actually get something in to make this town worth visitng. "

Corrie of Andover says:
13:19  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"Typical - take money from us just for Christmas then disappear - nice.... thanks HMV. You showed pure greed there! "

Lee of Appleshaw says:
11:59  on  Thursday 7th January 2010
"Great one of only a few good shops in andover and there off,how sad."
