Tuesday 11th May 2010 |
Test Valley Borough Council could be about to dive into a project to bring a brand new leisure centre to Andover.
It's just one of a number of aims for the authority in the next year that have been outlined by council leader Ian Carr.
Creating self-service online features and affordable loans for people in need have also been highlighted.
But Councillor Carr says a new sports venue is well overdue: "People will tell you the Leisure Centre is well past its sell-by date, I mean there's probably more water underneath it than there is in the swimming pool!
"It's not as good as it could be, it needs bringing into the 21st century and that's what we aim to do. We've moved on from when that was built in the 1960s or early 70s and it just needs updating, and hopefully we can do that."
This is our Talking Point today. Does Andover need a new leisure centre? What would you like to see it include. Tell us your thoughts by leaving a comment below. |

"The answer to this question is YES! ALC has a massive advantage due to its central location however the facilites are generally dated and unattractive to new and existing members. As the Hawk Eye Observer i have witnessed very poor conditions throughout the building including wetside and the gym. Hawk Eyes conclusion on this one is: New Centre and new staff!" |

"As the chairman of the Arthritis Care group in Andover the sports centre was discussed at our meeting last week and we agreed that we need walk in access for the disabled into a new pool. It is the best way for us to exercise whilst protecting our joints and we don't all want to be hoisted into a swimming pool!" |

"i think this would be a bit extravagant in the current climate. the only part of the leisure centre i have found to be shocking was the pool changing rooms, disgusting. they are currently being refurbished at last so i look forward to maybe going for a swim now.
if they've got some money to spare why don't they bring the cost of the gym etc down so ordinary people like me can afford to use the facilities. for a 'not for profit' organisation it's very expensive imo!" |

"Well done Mr Carr you are about to spend rater payers money on this project! and yet our roads are in such a bad state of repairs and damaging our cars daily. Its no good with a man putting a little bit of tar and patting down with his shovel and two minutes later its gone, the same of union street it takes 5 workers all day + to put a couple of shovel loads of tar to replace wobbly slaps the town has started to look like a patchwork quilt unlevel you are sad mr carr? "I think Andover leisure need a complete overall if it works out cheaper building a new centre to bring Andover Leisure Centre into future is build new centre where Anton Laundry used to be their is space their for it and where the centre is now demolish it and have a better car park for the lights and have mini park in front of the lights so with the theatre plaza built it will be overlooking the park and the lights so west street will look so up to date I would also move the court house either to Walworth Busness Park or totally refurbish the present on with brand new entrance hall in front of it to bring up to date" |

"Why push goodmoney after bad, the government will soon be announcing spending cuts so a new leisure centre is pie in the sky. If the council has money to spare they should be lowering the rates on shops and businesses so that more come to the town, the Walworth is a disgrace with acres of empty buildings, and yet we let the Co-op build on a green field site, this council wants kicking out, and some people with common sense brought in." |

"Whats the point in paying out £350,000 on a changing room refurb if the council are considering building a new leisure centre? Surely as the other changing rooms have been there for 30 odd years they could last another couple years until til new centre is done?? Or Just revamp the centre we have, its in an ideal place right in the centre of town." |

"I think this is a fabulous idea. Andover has undergone a lot of positive change and, with this change in mind, it would attract more people into the town and upgrade much welcomed facilities into the community. There have been other neighbouring towns that have encountered a similar change and I fully support Andover heading that way too. I have used the facilities at the leisure centre and, being the age it is, a refurbishment plan is much needed. Fingers crossed this goes ahead!!!" |

"I know the council have certain ammounts in certain pots but why should a perfectly operating leisure center need a overhaul when the roads are still full of pot holes ??? Surely, the damage to cars must come firstly, as the cost of repairs for punctures and wheel balancing must preceed the cost of a overhaul !! Or has the council got a franchise going with quickfit, merityre and A.T.S. ??????" |

"Bit surprised that the Councillor said that. My 2 children have swimming lessons at Andover Leisure Centre and at the moment the swimming area is being done up at last. The whole place needed to be refurbished a few years ago but instead only the gym area was done. I'm very pleased the simming area is now being sorted out as its been aweful there for over 6 mths. Unfortunetly the pool side is still open whilst the work is being carried out so my eldest child had a freezing cold shower after her lesson at the weekend. I am seriously considering cancelling my childrens lessons whilst the update is happening as I'm fed up with having to use a changing room with no light overhead, and sometimes only having 3 or 4 showers working when there are 12 children in the lessons. I think its a bit late now to talk about creating a whole new leisure centre when money is already being spent to update the one we have. " |

"Brilliant Idea...
May I make a suggestion that the council contacts the local schools so that the children themselves can put forward via their respective heads, what they would like this new leisure centre to hopefully provide? This could/should provide not only a wealth of suggestions - but also might make the youngsters feel more responsible about this new facility if they were to feel that they had some input in it? (Just a thought)
