Talking Point / Talking Point - Name The New School
Talking Point - Name The New School
Friday 26th March 2010

Andover's growing population has been underlined after it was announced a new school for the town is on the way.

Hampshire County Council is set to spend nearly £9 million to create the new primary at East Anton for the Augusta Park development.

Once it's finished, it'll be state of the art - with craft areas, a music and drama studio, IT suites, food technology rooms, two playgrounds and a sports field.

But they need a name for it, and the temporary governing body want our help with some suggestions, as chair Chris Davies explains: "It's great for the community to have a school right at the heart of it and people from the local community be included in it right from the very beginning.

"At the moment it's a school with no name. We would like new and different names - some of the things we've come up with are scientific names like 'Voyager' and 'Discovery'."

The building scheme, set to cost around £8.7m, includes a host of exciting features designed to make the school a flexible space for learning and wider community use, placing it at the heart of the community.

The internal layout of the proposed building has been designed so the school can be adapted to meet the needs of changing learning styles in the future with the use of interconnecting spaces offering flexibility to cater for varying group sizes and special events.

The project is part of a major investment by the County Council into education and learning in the Andover area which will include the building of two more new schools to meet the needs of planned housing development for the area.

The project will now go before the Executive Member of Policy and Resources, Councillor Ken Thornber, at his decision day on 14th April. If given the go ahead work is scheduled to start this summer, subject to planning approval, and should be completed by August 2011.

Commenting on the proposals Councillor David Kirk, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Children's Services and the ward member for Andover South said: "This is an exciting time for Andover and this school will play a very important role in the community. The design of the building and the proposals for its facilities are aimed at making the school a focal point for the whole community.

"As well as benefiting pupils and staff by providing them with a high quality learning environment the proposals include wider access out of school hours for the community to make use of its excellent facilities."

If you've got any ideas for what to call the new school leave them in a comment below.

Mary B of Andover says:
13:25  on  Wednesday 7th April 2010
"I am not objecting to the use of Harrow - The Harrow Way or Harroway forms the western part of the Old Way, an ancient trackway in the south of England, dating from the Neolithic period, which can be traced from Rochester and the Channel ports in the Straits of Dover along the North Downs and through Guildford, Farnham, Andover and Basingstoke to Salisbury Plain and Stonehenge, and on to Seaton on the Devon coast. It is sometimes described as the 'oldest road in Britain' and is possibly associated with ancient tin trading. A perfect historic connection. John Hanson is such because of a previous bailiff of Andover etc.etc. However, there is no connection with 'augusta' so it becomes a nonsense, just as the names 'Voyager' and 'Discovery' are totally insipid and meaningless names. "

Anon of Andover says:
15:19  on  Thursday 1st April 2010
"Mary B, no, it doesn't clear anything up, it simplifies the fact you're confusing the comment made(by which you were typing whilst thinking) by yourself. Lets get this into perspective, shall we? "Whether I was truly ironic is neither here nor there", you stated after typing(whilst thinking) "Duh . . Anon . . I was being ironic", contradicting, luv. As for you saying am i embarrassed not giving my ture name out, well, i've got news for you! My real first name is Anon, my surname is 'Ymous', isn't that ironic, don't you think?"

Mary B of Andover says:
14:45  on  Thursday 1st April 2010
"Anon of Andover - presumably Anon because you are too embarrassed to identify yourself - no, I am not related to the 'illegible' Mr Toates, and no, I do not have, as you say, the intellect of a gnat. Have you always been so supercilious, or is it something you have cultivated over the years? My point was - and I guess I'll have to spell it out to you in a simpler form . . . is that I cannot recall anyone 'inspirational' from Andover - only someone who might be renowned in the field of Botany (note the use of humour in the word field when connected to Botany) and some sad has-been from a 1960's pop band.Neither of whom could be called inspirational. Whether I was truly ironic is neither here nor there - just as Alanis Morisette wasn't being 'ironic' 9 times out of 11 when she sang 'isn't it ironic' in her '96 song 'Ironic'. Hope that clears it up. "

Anon of Andover says:
14:09  on  Thursday 1st April 2010
"Mary B, are you related to Robin Toates by any chance? Because between the both of you, you seem to have the intellect of a gnat. Never mind telling people to spell check, try buying a dictionary and looking up the word 'irony', it doesn't state 'Irony - the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning....as for everyone trying to understand Mary B, it also means we must understand how she types is how she speaks or vice versa'. Again, i reiterate, your first comment is of no irony what-so-ever, look up the word 'contradiction'. You may thank me anytime. Duh"

Bucks of Andover says:

Mary B of Andover says:
10:50  on  Thursday 1st April 2010
"To call it 'andovr scool' probably wouldn't inspire anyone with confidence!! Spellchecker, anyone? Oh, and Anon, believe me, the tone in my voice as I typed my comment was definitely on of irony. "

Robin Toates of Luggershall says:
06:19  on  Thursday 1st April 2010
"wot u on bout ? duh is a stupd nam 4 a scool wot duz it meen nd is it short 4 anyfin ? y not just cal it andovr scool i lick tht nam its simpel nd wuld put the scool on the map we wil show the rest of the contry wot wer maid of nd show tht wer movin 4word"

Anon of Andover says:
22:43  on  Wednesday 31st March 2010
"Duh? Mary B, there is NOTHING ironic in your first reply. It's contradicting, not ironic. Quote "Hmmm . . . I challenge you to think of ANYBODY who has come from Andover to achieve anything inspirational!!! Maybe Charles Clarke the botanist who died in 1906 or Reg Presley from the Trogs - that's about it!", where is the irony in that comment? Sandwich short of a picnic comes to mind. Duh"

Mary B of Andover says:
17:44  on  Wednesday 31st March 2010
"Duh . . Anon . . I was being ironic - no one inspirational would come out of Andover - there is nothing to inspire anyone here! Maybe it should be named after the developers who have ruined the area - Bryant Primary or maybe The Taylor Wimpey School ????? "

nicky tamser of charlton says:
13:52  on  Wednesday 31st March 2010
"why don't we sell the naming rights to the highest bidder, that way money could be pumped into the school for funds by the council,it could be fun calling it the milky bar school"

Richie Madisun of Andover says:
13:17  on  Wednesday 31st March 2010
"I was thinking of maybe a local artist, musician or generally any influential positive figure that could be used a sort of role model. I dont think names of the futuristic kind would suit either, as like you said Andover is far behind the times and to do so would make it stand out in a negative way. As for finding someone from Andover who is inspirational I can think of a few but I guess its down to the views of the masses. "

Anon of Andover says:
06:28  on  Wednesday 31st March 2010
"Reg Presley inspirational? I nearly choked on my scones reading that! The guy is a numpty, he would sit happily alongside George Young, the other numpty of Andover. I agree with you saying keeping the name basic, why does the name have to be something science fiction? Calling the new school along the lines of 'Discovery' and 'Voyager' would be a mockery of the area, considering the rest of Andover is far behind the times"

Mary B of Andover says:
16:13  on  Tuesday 30th March 2010
"Hmmm . . . I challenge you to think of ANYBODY who has come from Andover to achieve anything inspirational!!! Maybe Charles Clarke the botanist who died in 1906 or Reg Presley from the Trogs - that's about it! Plus . . Augusta Springs is a place in Virginia USA - hardly appropriate for Andover. Just an ordinary, sensible name: something like Alamein Primary, East Anton Primary, Picket Twenty Primary or Icknield Way Primary?"

Anon of Andover says:
22:00  on  Monday 29th March 2010
"If only we lived in the same world as you do, Manuela, pink fluff, bubbles 'n all. Perhaps the only 'Discovery' for you would to send you off with the next one into outer space and join the world you love being in. Good point Richie, thats a great idea"

Richie Madisun of Andover says:
13:18  on  Monday 29th March 2010
"Why not name the school after someone who has come from the town and has gone on to do something really inspirational. That would surely show the young learners that they can achieve their potential just like (add name) has ! "

Manuela of Andover Hampshire says:
11:52  on  Monday 29th March 2010
"I agree with you... as our children are, our future, they are quite literally the next generation for Andover..... it was a proper heartfelt comment and suggestion...no mention of Dr Spock was in my thoughts... I am never more certain of this than when I go into the schools. The children are the future they are the next generation of adults for our town.... that is what I meant that was why I thought it was an apt name for this new and up and coming school. m"

Sylvia Andrews of Roman Way says:
11:27  on  Monday 29th March 2010

""Andover new generation school"? You're having a laugh, right? Would we also be asking Spock to be head teacher? Why make this such a complicated subject, why not keep it simple like some have suggested i.e Augusta spring or Bellgrove, please not Discovery or anything daft like that!"

Katie of Andover of Roman Way says:
09:22  on  Friday 26th March 2010
"Firstly how confusing would it be if it was called East Anton Primary school, we already have an Anton school. I think it should be called something like Andover Primary, there used to be an Andover school many years ago. Also my Grandad suggested Bellgrove as he used to play in Bellgrove Copse in this area when he was younger. Or what about Saxon school as we have a Knights Enham and a Roman Way, but not one representing our Saxon heritage. Good luck finding a name, what ever you choose I am sure it will be a great school."

Sally of Andover says:
09:16  on  Friday 26th March 2010
"What on earth is wrong with something simple like East Anton Primary School? If I ever had children I would certainly cringe everytime I told somebody they went to Discovery Primary or Voyager School? Just because it's a new school it doesn't mean it has to have an unusual name. If you want it to have credibility give it a simple name! "

Neil of Andover says:
08:52  on  Friday 26th March 2010
"Why not call the new school 'AUGUSTA SPRING' ie Spring from Sheppard Spring and new location and Spring can have meaning Springing into learning the early years"

Manuela of Andover says:
08:03  on  Friday 26th March 2010
"First and foremost can I just say what fabulous news this is for Andover in General... utterly fabulous... Investing in our children has got to be great news.... How about a play on the words that are often used? That our children, our the future the next generation Andover’s Hope for the Future... So could we not call this new and exciting school something like ♥Andover's New Generation♥ "
