Friday 8th January 2010 |
Within a month, a Poundland store will open its doors on Andover's High Street.
The discount retailer has confirmed that they will be arriving on 4th February, in the former Woolworths building, employing 30 members of staff.
When rumours first emerged about their arrival, there was a negative reaction from some local people who claimed the shop presents the wrong image for the town.
Poundland's Retail Operations Director Tim McDonnell says he thinks the attitudes will change: "It's a shame really because I think that's based on rumour and speculation. When you actually see the quality of the store fit, you really will be pleasantly surprised because it's quite a high quality store fit comparible to most of the major supermarkets.
"I know there are a few towns and cities around the country who initially have been a little reticent when we've turned up but when they've actually come into the store they've been very pleasantly surprised and we've also got some very favourable feedback from them as well."
How do you feel about the store coming to the town? Let us know by leaving a comment below. |

"poundland is a supermarket with big brands all at a pound. they have 300 stores and have big buying power so can sell it at a reduced price.
it has employed 30 people, some of which had been made redundant from other closed stores in the town.
today kirk from coronation street came, there was a dj and the atmosphere was fantastic. the 800 square feet store was packed. give it a try you will be amazed." |

"Everybody has heard of, and most of us are living with this terrible recession. So it is a relief to those of us who have to watch prices in other stores rise out of all proportion, together with their sneeky product marketing.
Poundland sell brand name goods and I am sure there are many many people who will support such a good store.
When we lost Woolworths, it was almost regarded as the lost of a national institution.... and that store started of as a 'bargain' store.
WELCOME to POUNDLAND" |

Let's all embrace this shop now that we have got it. It wasn't the first choice for lots of us - me included - but let me suggest that it is a shop that will bring funds into the town and employment. Lets be gracious and accept that it is here, support it if we want to, and don't if you don't want to. But lets be gracious and wish them well in Andover." |

If you want a birthday card and a cup of coffee , then great stay in Andover. And now Poundland ! Wonderful. Do they sell beer ?" |

"You know that expression "Dress for the job you want, not the job you've got" ? well, thats what Andover needs to do.
If all the town aspires to have is discount outlets then that's all we'll ever get, don't get me wrong, I love a bargain or two but surely enough of the cheap cheap shops in the town and maybe try to get a little bit of quality. Some of us don't mind paying a little bit more for some items so surely we deserve the option to shop where we want as well as those that would appreciate a Poundland and you can say what you want about still being in a recession but it's not so bad that all people want to do is shop for pennies, if that was true the towns pubs and bars wouldn't be so rammed packed with people drinking their wages away.
I don't want the town to continue to be a ghost town but until its brings up its A game and strives to be more than it currently is then it will just continue to be the joke that it is." |

"What a suprise! This town has nothing, i shall not support this town until there are drastic changes. People who visit this town must walk away from it thinking 'what a crock of ****', because that's all this town is. 'I know what, lets have another coffee shop! How about another phone shop? What about ANOTHER card shop, no no no, lets have another betting shop! Yes, that's it! Just what the town wants!'. No, thanks. I'd rather stick to travelling to the towns and cities that surround us where we have a superb range of places to eat, shop. This is a town of 60,000+ people and getting bigger, what do we need? Yes! A poundland! That'll keep us shopping here! You wonder why this town cannot attract big name department stores?" |

"Wow so many views. What we have to remember is you cant please everyone all of the time. Poundland perahps it would not have been on the top of my list of choices. And we do have a lot of should we say less expensive choice shops.
I would love to see a Matalan here, clothes for all bedding, household, toys, shoes and more, all of what i would call middle of the road qaulity and brilliant prices. But if you were to ask my 16 year old daughter she would say Primark as I think all the teenagers from Andover go to Basingstoke just to shop there. My Mother would maybe choose John lewis or Debenhams. I agree with the comment that we should make a stand in the next elections if we want to help with change. But remember my first few words You cant please everyone all the time, there are 3 different choices just from my household so lets give poundland a chance and just bombard the council with what stores we want
I love our town and I mostly only shop here even at christmas. happy new year to all of you " |

"How many times do we hear of people moaning about their corner shop closing and then when you ask, you find out they did their weekly shop at Tesco?
The shops in town are no different. They are there to make a profit and if we don't spend enough in them then they shut. How many expressed sadness at Woolworths closing? Now how many actually shopped there?
The people saying about John Lewis and Debenhams coming to Andover, there must be a reason for them not coming and I'd guess that reason is they cannot see enough money being made here.
How about one of you writing to their Head Office and asking if they have any plans and if not, why not?" |

"Perhaps the Council should stop thinking about jumping in the pockets of any old tom, dick and Poundland who offer to take over empty shops and actually think about what they are offering to the local residents. Perhaps a more attractive town, with a variety of unique stores that attracts people to come to the town further a field than Andover..may have a knock on effect. Also hopefully attracting business to the dump that is Walworth Industrial Estate..Of course reducing the insane business charges would be a good start too! The Fat Cats are too greedy to see the wood for the trees!! Cheaper rates = more new business and regular income..its far better than relying on a few business...some inclome. They need to look at the long term future of Andover, not the grab and dash policy they do now. We need a decent furniture store, Bring back the old fashioned sweet shop, A good childrens clothes shop, better clothes shops for everyone full stop! Get a good grocery in the town and give us a decent butcher again! If decent companies are not putting themselves forward to take over a premisis in the town...the councillors should ask themseleves why? I know why....because this place has turned into a dump." |

I live very near 2 supermarkets but still shop in the one the other side of town for price! It is foolish to pay £3 for something you can get the same named brand in poundland for a quid! I save more than i waste on petrol. As for supporting the trade in Andover no i dont as i have no need for a new mobile phone contract and i dont drink coffee, I dont drink during the day and I dont need a new bank or to bet on a horse! well that just about exhausts Andovers trade!! If you don't like Poundland, then don't shop there but do spare a thought for the many people desperate for a job at the moment, and you never know if we start to fill those empty units the bigger shops might follow. I understand everyones points of view, that we are in a recession and yes i will be shopping there. I ain't stupid. One question we have to ask is though, have they kept the upstairs open or have they blocked it off??
But i also understand the people who say that this site is prime for a bigger company. This town is scared of change and it will never have a department store like BHS or Debenhams because they will never come her and our illustrious councillours would never make a decision thats good for our town centre.
It is 2010, lets get over the fact that Andover is a market town, it isn't its a town that has a market, there is a huge difference.
Things are not going to change depite that wonderful vision for the future. That vision should have read, "ahhhh.... we need money just give the shops to anyone"." |

Poundland will be here like most retailers for the year, as they get a free year's rent. Then if they don't make enough profit they too will be gone. Just like all those other seasonal shops.
The town council is made up of small retailers and that is the reason big name shops do not come to the town.
Enough of cheap tat and charity shops, cheap clothing retailers like Bon Marche (incidentally the French word for "cheap"), we will be having other cheapies next like Primark and Matalan!
The building would have been better utilised as a department store like Debenhams.
We need quality in Andover, not a quantity of cheap inferior goods.
If you are daft enough to spend just £1 on an item, for instance toys, then be prepared for the tears when they fall apart!
Come on Andover, department stores, larger quality retailers, BHS, more boutiques.....not everyone who shops and lives here is a charity shop tracksuit wearing bargain hunter!

"people moan theres no shops in andover and when one comes along they still are not happy and sound so ungrateful, i think they should count them self lucky that a resonible price shop will be coming is better then a high price department or designer shop that will close down after 2-3 months and then the shop will remain empty i say yes to poundland" |

"A shop that size could have been so much more than a quid shop.
I cannot believe that the powers that be do not think in the same way as us common folk and hold out until someone with a proper idea came along to utilise the space.
The building has been shut for a while, it wasnt an eyesore until the builders went in.
Thought we were moving forward when Asds was only allowed in if it provided a cinema.
Oh well, they are the powers that be." |

"Andover Council is allowing this town to be totally run down. It is appalling, so much for Ian Carrs vision of the future. All Andover can offer is mobile phone, Card, and cheap and nasty pound shops. Where is the department store we've been promised for years. Here was a prime location, which needed a big store name. There is nothing to temp shoppers into Andover anymore, the only people who shop here is locals. If you need to shop then you go to Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton or Salisbury. There is no other choice, Andover is awful now. It's only saving grace is the fab Farmers Market, The Lights and the Cinema. These are the only new injections of life into the town that people really wanted. But we need store diversity and quality." |

"Andover has always been a town too afraid of change,we used to be bigger than Basingstoke.
I think it will do Andover good to have any company moving into the old Woolies building, all we seem to have are mobile phone companys and pubs in town. with all the empty shops all we need is some 'tumble weed' rolling down the High Street to make it look a ghost town. Come on Andover move into the 21st century." |

"In these hard times no-one can really afford to be a snob. I know we all want a Primark or a BHS etc. but we need to count ourselves lucky that it will create new jobs for local people!" |
